Examiner.com: Local attorney petitions governor to leave Hayden Act intact; Hayden weighs in

Governor Jerry Brown

(Palm Springs) – Updated 1/27/12 – A Palm Springs attorney, Marla Tauscher, initiated a petition drive to urge Governor Jerry Brown to reconsider his proposal to gut some of the Hayden Act’s most important provisions.  The Hayden Act is California’s landmark animal shelter reform legislation.  It was signed by then-Governor Pete Wilson in 1998 and became effective in 1999.  In recent years certain mandates have been suspended due to the economy and now Brown proposes to repeal those sections.

Tauscher, whose areas of practice include animal law, created the petition through Change.org.  She hopes that she can collect at least 10,000 signatures.  She is well on her way.  In a little more than the week the petition has been available on line, 5300 animal lovers have signed it.
