The San Bernardino County Sherriff’s Department Promotional System – Is It Fair??? Well we are into another year and very close to the time when members of the Sherriff’s Department will be testing again for a promotion. For those still on the list there may be one more chance for them to get promoted within the current system. If those who are in group one are not promoted they will be forced to test again, cross their fingers and hope that they do as well this time around as they did last time. If not then they stand a chance of not being promoted while people who scored below them were. Most people that are familiar with the system now in place are not very happy with it. And for those that do not know how it works here is a little sample. Deputies at the rank of deputy and detective are given a promotional evaluation by the station that they work at. This evaluation is conducted by the staff at the station. The evaluation is then sent downtown to the deputy chief in charge of the station/division. Most times the evaluation stays the same unless a member of the executive staff sends it back to the station and tells the Captain to change it because someone wants to make sure that the person is promoted.
