Sometimes animal rescue workers get lucky and take in an animal that needs nothing but a good home. Sometimes rescued animals get lucky and find an angel working as an animal rescue worker who takes it in no matter how bad of shape it is in. Racecar is one such “lucky” kitty. Racecar was dumped at the Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino County, the county’s main detention and euthanizing facility, by an unknown person and due to unknown circumstances. She caught the eye of someone at Kitty Devore, a rescue that specializes in the previously ignored cats of Devore. Their goal is to rescue all “friendly” kitties not otherwise adopted. They find homes for some not-so-friendly kitties too. To read the rest of the story, click here.
by AdministratorEarlier this month about 20 animal welfare workers participated in a national protest against high-kill shelters by picketing at the infamous Devore Shelter. Devore has become well known throughout the United States and Canada as one of the deadliest shelters in North America. The Devore Shelter is the main detention and euthanizing center for the largest county in the lower 48 contiguous states, San Bernardino, whose borders reach from the Los Angeles County line to the Arizona and Nevada state lines. The county spans more than 20,000 square miles. To read the rest of this story, click here.
by AdministratorThe recent attempt by California Governor Jerry Brown to repeal provisions of the Hayden Act, the state’s landmark shelter animal welfare legislation, highlights the need for animal shelter advocates to become politically savvy. For real reform to occur, we must work towards electing leaders who share our beliefs as they relate to animal welfare. In an attempt to educate animal advocates, I decided to write a regular column called “Politicos and Pets” to highlight elected leaders and others who want our vote. The column will focus on pets and those politicos who love not only their own pets, but have a heart for the plight of abused and unwanted animals everywhere. Paul Schrader is a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He will be making his second run for the office of sheriff for San Bernardino County in 2014. by Administrator“ANOTHER CRISES IN DEVORE! SHARE WIDE, ACTION NEEDED! Smells like retaliation to me: It appears that one of the supervisors at San Bernardino, Greg Beck( the very man who said Devore never refused blankets! ) has removed medical waivers for sick dogs. We can no longer pull dogs that are sick, which is 75% of the shelter.
by AdministratorChristine Haslet, who has been mentioned on this blog a few times and who occasionally comments will be on the The Pet Show tomorrow with nationally syndicated host Warren Eckstein. She will be discussing the Devore Animal Shelter.

by Administrator(San Bernardino) – Perhaps they do it because they once knew the feeling of being alone and scared themselves. Maybe their hearts are touched into action by those terrified eyes staring back at them through the cold, stainless steel bars, desperately hoping someone, anyone, will come to rescue and love them half as much as they will love in return. Whatever the reason, animal rescuers know first-hand the rewards, and heartache, of helping those of God’s creatures that others have forgotten, neglected, and left to be killed. Rescuers must have hearts of gold and emotions of steel to deal with the death and abuse they witness with each new day. From uncaring shelter workers to backyard breeders and puppy mill owners who sell sick animals, or irresponsible owners who allow their pets to breed and breed again only to dump the results in someone else’s yard to clean up the mess, they see the dark, heartless side of pet ownership.
