by AdministratorAdmin: My source for this story is very high ranking; however, please note how it is worded. I am not treating it as a done deal until we see it on the BOS agenda. Sources in Barstow are saying Mojave Water Agency Division 6 director, Beverly Lowry, is expected to be named as San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor James Ramos’ field representative for the Barstow area. Lowry has lived in the area for more than 50 years. If appointed, this will be at least Lowry’s second stint working for a county supervisor. She served former First District Supervisor Kathy Davis during the 1990s as well as a field representative at the state level. For a total of 20 years she says she was “a strong advocate for the people of the High Desert regardless of political affiliation, helping them to navigate what at times can be confusing government bureaucracy,” according to her MWA biography. by AdministratorI just started a Barstow News Group, hoping that it will be a place to post my stories AND that get information for new stories. If you live in Barstow, interested in Barstow, or just one of those who document everything I do, here is the link: Barstow
by AdministratorAdministrator’s Note: Below is the first in a series on American communities. Basically, what I am doing is a writeup about the community and from there I will be reviewing a variety of attractions in that community. That is why I have been asking for some recommendations in various towns. Being the first in the series, this one is a bit convoluted and I hope the rest are better. Also, I don’t currently have use of my camera so I am at a disadvantage. But it should get better. As I said in the story, I would love to hear recommendations. I do have one dilemma. Two of the restaurants I want to feature are Mitla’s and Alfredo’s as well as an article on the Route 66 Rendezvous.. Now, how the heck do I first write a positive piece about San Bernardino? No one will take it seriously. It came to me as I was driving on Highway 247 past the Slash X, one hand on the steering wheel and a potato and cheese burrito from Plata’s in the other. I had just left a street dedication ceremony Saturday morning in Barstow that I had attended as a favor to a friend and wondered to myself how the heck I would translate that into an Americana column or my brand new regular feature spotlighting small communities that I am calling “Main Street USA.” Barstow is the epitome of “Main Street USA.” It is small town in the California desert with [...]
by Administrator(Apple Valley, CA) – Many years ago I was working in the San Bernardino County Marshal’s Office in Barstow, California. Barstow is a small town on Route 66 and is intersected by Interstates 15 and 40. For most Angelinos, Barstow is thought of as the halfway point between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. To them, it’s a place to fill up the gas tank and grab a quick bite to eat from one of many fast food joints, but nothing more. One of those Angelinos walked into my office to pay off a speeding-ticket-turned-arrest-warrant just as I was answering the phone, “Marshal’s Office, Deputy Gilbert.” When I hung up the phone, he asked me with a puzzled look, “What did you say when you answered the phone?” To read the rest of the story, click here.
by AdministratorI developed my second bout of stomach flu in about the past five days this morning. This time it only wiped me out for the most of the day and not 36 hours like a few days ago. Late today I decided to get into town to blog to try to feel better. I ended up at the old Starbucks in Barstow. I have never been inside this Starbucks before. They certainly don’t want people staying for very long as there is not a comfortable seat in the place, almost no tables, and very few plugs. And the music is just blasting away.
