Similarly to the state of California and most of the state’s cities and counties, Orange County is facing a serious deficit this fiscal year that could climb as high as $83 million. In December 2010, Supervisors voted to freeze hiring and slash five percent from General Fund departments to close the gap a bit.
The supervisors are also looking for ways to reduce county payroll and benefits another $100 million this fiscal year, but apparently do not feel that the highest paid officials should have to share in the pain. “Arrogance” and a “sense of entitlement” came to mind when we learned today that the Orange County Board of Supervisors quietly allowed their voluntary salary reduction plan to end, which will contribute to an even higher deficit.
