The City of Barstow held its Earth Day Celebration at the Barstow Discovery Center this past weekend. Residents of the city and surrounding areas were treated to exhibits and demonstrations that included solar cooking, recycling, backyard composting, sustainable living, desert animals and upcycling.
What is upcycling? If you were not able to attend you may not know. Upcyling is recycling useless material and waste with the purpose to create a new product that is of higher quality or higher environmental value.
One of the most popular attractions at the event was the baby tortoise. Mojave Desert tortoises are protected. It is illegal to disturb or capture them in the wild but adoption programs are available to help those already in captivity. Wild tortoise populations have been reduced by up to 90 percent in recent decades.
