iePolitics: BOS Salaries

Bill Tuck Jr. asked for the salaries for the Second District.  Here are  the salary and benefit packages for all of the board staff.  This list does not include John Richardson, Mary O’Toole, Mark Kirk, Bob Page, and the other analyst whose name I forget from the Fourth District whose positions were transferred to the County Administrative Office budget.   That equals at least another million dollars.

  1. Hello? Why are secretaries making 100k plus per year and the chief of staffs a quarter of a million? Are you f****ing kidding me? Is this a typo?

  2. 5 seperate kingdoms created for the crooks. Over paid for what they due beyond imagination.

Their hours 8am-whenever, weekends and holidays off. County cars, cell phones, credit cards, expense accounts, etc, etc.

No wonder their all suck asses and YES people. No wonder they cut each others throat at every opportunity.

For the men in these 5 districts, not enough manhood to make a set in the real world of political correctness.

No wonder Page, Watson sold their souls to the devil.

And ladies who secretary for almost $100k a year. Sorry, bullshit for YOU too!!!

You folks are making much more than the average street cop and fireman, and WELL beyond many other County employees, is just plain crap.

Your average day consists of punching a few buttons, answering the phone in your BEST possible BS concerned voice.

And the sweaty part of your job is picking up a COFFEE pot to pour your boss a cup.

Why not demand a 10% increase for having to cover up and lie for your bosses too!!!

  3. Thank you so much for this information. With all of the unemployment, people losing their homes and a huge decline in overall tax revenue, I sincerely hope these salaries and benefits are addressed during the bext State of the County Address. This is B.S. to the max :(

  4. If you attend a SB Board of Supervisors meeting, the county people show up for the photo ops and then most of them leave and then before Public Comments just about all of them leave. Gary Ovitt made a statement a few months back when asked if Public Comments could come first and he pretty much said it was a waste of County employee time to be there longer than what he thought was necessary. As exempt employees they should stay there every Tuesday when there’s a meeting as they get paid enough to finish whatever work they had to go back to complete. It’s tough having to attend all those dinners and ceremonies.

  5. I am FLABBERGASTED! I truly hope that these salaries make into the mainstream media.
The average citizen is completely oblivious to this complete travesty of government.
None of these people deserve or are qualified to earn these salaries. This is absolutely disgusting.

Thirty even twenty years ago goverment service (elected or not) was an actual sacrifice. Now it is a lucrative profession. And that is EXACTLY what has gone wrong in this county and our local cities. As far as I am concerned, now that I have seen these salaries (thank you I.E. Politics) this is surely of Bell-style corruption standards. Chiefs of Staff have no business making $200K+ year for being no more than hot air, stuffed shirt, mouthpieces. And secretaries earning almost $100K a year! You’ve got to be kidding me!!

Devilreaux and his flunkies on the BOS better hope that these salary numbers don’t get better advertised. If the public sees these (and I hope they do), in our currrent economic state, there will be a justifiable call by the public for a mutinous recall. Let’s hope it happens soon…

  6. The spreadsheets were released to the media on December 6 or 7. I had planned to do a story on this subject then but got sidetracked and then forgot all about it. I wasn’t going to bother, but since Bill asked, I posted the information. The reason I wasn’t going to bother is the fact that no one seems to care. Mainstream media barely covered it and there has been no public outcry over what they did cover.

  7. Well now, no wonder the county D.A.’s office has cut staff and salaries. Read the Daily Bulletin, June, 2010 (written by Joe Nelson) excerpt below:

“Obviously with the down economy and the drop in sales tax, it has severely affected our budget in the D.A.’s office,” Hackleman said. “In the last two years, the county has in fact covered those losses, and we are in ongoing discussions with the C.A.O.’s office in covering those losses again this year. But we have additional losses, much of it from the state from the budget cuts that affected us.”

So it seems that the very folks that should be investigating these absurd salaries on the 5th Floor have their hands tied by finances and BOS budget hanky-panky.If you cut the law enforcement budget down — who has the resources to investigate this type of white collar crime???

How is that a former YMCA director (Ovitt’s new chief of staff) is instantly making twice the amount of your average general practicioner?

There is something that has truly run amok in San Bernardino County. There is no possible way that the CAO or the BOS can justify this seeming public theft of county taxes for overinflated salaries.

    Unbelievable!

  8. The County of San Bernardino is just another “Bell” scandal waiting in the wings, only much worse. The story is ripe for the picking if only a journalist step up.

  9. http://www.legistorm.com/member/42/Sen_Dianne_Feinstein_CA/65.html

This is a spreadsheet on Feinstein’s staff, she pays her staff less than San Bernardino County. Its sad when Feinstein and Boxer are moree fiscally conservative than our board of supervisors when it comes to the salaries for their staffers.
Feinstein’s field representatives only make like $76,800 a year.

I would like to see a baseline on salaries based on average salaries for the US Senate for comparable positions.

I think we need a county charter amendment to reign in the BOS and CAO. Maybe the San Bernardino County Democratic Party could finance this, since the Republican BOS members basically wrecked the county government mostly.

  10. Sharon I guess you should add all the money spent to furnish these luxury offices they work in too. It’s part of the kingdom.

Anyway we can break down what employee get’s what perks? Like who get’s a county car, cell phone, credit card etc?

AND why must there be a Deputy Chief of Staff?

We should add the CAO’s office into this since he is building his kingdom too!!

The regular employees who were asked or had to take cuts to keep there jobs should be outraged by this crap.

They are being treated like peasants when you really think about it. No wonder the BOS kiss Ramos and Hoops butt, who is going to protect them?

I hope the working class employees in ALL departments see this and SHOW the CAO the big finger next time he comes along asking for more concessions.

Has any of the districts cut back on anything? Did any of them take a pay cut? Loose any perks?

Now I heard a RUMOR awhile back that when some Deputy Chiefs retire, Hoops and just a handful or couple of others would run the department and not replace those retiring.

That would interesting to see if true. SOMEONE might have to actually go out and work. NO more golfing on the clock. How cool would that be?

It would set a pretty cool precedent wouldn’t it?

  11. Dawn Sikes is the director for First District making $140k a year. Prior to this she didn’t have a position other than working on Ovitt, Postmus and Mitzelfelt’s campaign making about $50k a year and all she was helping with was campaigning. After my case was submitted where she hid my claim and blocked me from getting the original $10k owed to my company, she was promoted eventhough I made a complaint about her and others in the community too. Not too long ago the County talked about their cuts in jobs, then they play this shell game of giving promotions and hiring new employees. The County ignored the official complaint I made against her and yet they still promoted her and did not look into her unethical, illegal actions. Why would you promote someone who is doing something so shady and underhanded unless that fits the MO of a County employee. Why else would you be promoted from making $50k to $140k? And given a director title?

  12. Originally, the county was doing away with the Chief of Staff positions to save money, but all they did was put them under Devereaux’s CAO/CEO and then re-hired them as Chief of Staff’s with these high rates of pay. SB County $440,000,000.00 was given by the Federal Government (as printed in the Daily Press) for small businesses, but none of the small business owners saw any of this money instead it was given to large corporations such as the local water agencies and bonds. Isn’t this misappropriation of Federal grant money? Our community should be outraged with the high rate of unemployment and how many small businesses have shut down? Why isn’t this being looked into?

  13. Bell is being investigated for a couple of hundred thousand dollars, so why isn’t San Bernardino County being looked into for millions of dollars? Do you think that any of this money has been going into the Ramos coffers not to be investigated?

  14. I asked why SB County couldn’t pay me the original $10k from the grant money as I was a small business owner that they ruined and I was told that the money was already used up. And the person who told this to me was none other than “David Zook”, Chief of Staff for first district, Brad Mitzelfelt. I found out shortly after where the money went to and it wasn’t used for the purpose it was given.

  15. ACU I do not think that the rumor is true. They just promoted a new Asst Sheriff and two Deputy Chiefs. Also most of the people in special units have been advised that if they have been in the division for 7 years or more it is time to move on. That is going to be real funny for some of them that could not investigate a petty theft case let alone a important case.

And yes the public should know who has expense accounts and county cars. I heard that Garlands wife works for one of these Supervisors in the Big Bear area. Maybe someone could explain to us how this happens. Now I know how they afford the two houses.

But we want you pee ons to take a cut in salary because you are making to much money and the county is going broke. What a joke. Their secretary’s make more than your average Sgt with the department. They must have a really hard job. And look at what a field rep makes and you must ask yourself the question “What do they do”.

  16. ACU, they said they were going to leave two deputy chief positions “vacant for salary savings” but that only lasted about a minute. They recently had promotions and filled both of them. I guess that was supposed to make the general employees feel better after giving up their salary increases…….and then having to watch the sworn get theirs! No lack of promotions in the Sheriff’s Department. Plenty of $$$ there to keep running the business as usual.

  17. Thanks truth and Fed up for the information.

Garland’s wife puts a nice twist to the already over paid and overstaffed BOS crew.

  18. ACU, I appreciate all you are doing to get the corruption known to the People. Need to start looking into these water districts (ie. Pinon Hills/Phelan CSD Water, Hesperia, Adelanto, political coffers, Young Republicans funds, local realties such as Rose Realty), these are a few to start with as to funneling of money. Since I posted the first post this morning I just received a phone call from a “blocked caller” telling me, “You’d better close your mouth bi%ch or it will be closed for you.” This makes me a little nervous. You think it may be because I posted this morning? Obviously, I hit a nerve somewhere, but I’m not easily scared.

  19. First, Traci gets threatened at the SB Board of Supervisors meeting by a County Sheriff telling her it’s in her best interest if she doesn’t address the board that day and to remember what happened to Mr. Snell (clown activist), now this?! Also, take a look at what’s happened to our media and see how much money comes from the County to the local papers such as the SB Sun, Daily Press, etc. Why is it that Gilbert & Yvette are told their story is too political, yet the papers (one reporter stated) are getting calls almost daily in regards to CPS abuse.
Bill Jensen, former Mayor of Hesperia’s family owns Rose Realty (Jensen’s brother, Don is the broker) and he runs the Cocky Bull and the corrupt Tea Party where he’s hosted Mitzelfelt on a few occasions and endorsed corrupt politicians to the People and vetted the La Rouche PAC. His High Desert Tea Party that he’s trying to rename to the California Tea Party is not associated with any other Tea Party in the area. Let this be known as not to confuse the good ones with this one, The same corrupt politicians running in the last election were involved with the Young Republicans that Jensen was trying to push through these candidates in the last election. How is Jensen running a “closed” Cocky Bull (there’s a notice on the door that the Cocky Bull doesn’t have any affiliation with the Tea Party other than letting them use the space) and still serving beer and food? I heard that he hasn’t been claiming the money he’s been taking in for advertisement in their paper, Steeno Design contributions and from several realty companies, contractors and member contributions. I had one man tell me he’s been giving a couple hundred dollars a month, but won’t be doing that anymore.

  20. This is morally and ethically wrong. Shame on Supervisor Mitzelfelt for allowing this to go on.

  21. Resident: The sad thing here isn’t that Mitzelfelt is allowing this to happen, it is that he is part of everything that is going on. Sharon: take a look into some of the non-profits that Mitzelfelt and other Board of Supervisors are running. It may interest the public how much money is being given from tax dollars and goverment funding to such Businesses Such as Mitzelfelts non profit Ogranisation that David Zook is over seeing and running for him. Huh is this being done during the part time hours he is working for the County as a Chief of Staff?????????? “THAT CAN’T BE DONE FROM OUT OF STATE AND IS NEVER SUPPOSE TO BE CONDUCTED ON COUNTY TIME AS IT IS NOT PART OF HIS JOB DISCRIPTION!!!!!!!!!!!” SO WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON HERE? Last time I checked that is not a Chief of Staff’s job to be doing! DIDN’T SOMEONE GO TO JAIL FOR THIS KIND OF THING NOT TO LONG AGO? Check out the link for your self: The TaxExemptWorld.com The Bradley V. Mitzelfelt Foundation 12127 Mall Blvd Suite A119 Victorville C.A. 92392-7665.

  22. Please factor in any stipends for committee or board appointments, then ask each employee on the BOS staff what educational background is required to be a suck up to a politician. Ask what intergovernmental knowledge the possess when they call on a department manager to intervene on an otherwise apolitical government action.
Then ask them how much they should be making now that they only meet 26 or so times a year.
It is clear that the BOS is a lucrative position without real emphasis on governmental probity. The gravy train continues to run through this county.

  23. I contacted a local reporter regarding this and she said basically, well we voted them into office. I beg to differ in that the BoS salaries are not because of who we vote into office but are established by the BoS PRIOR to newly elected supervisors taking office! Please correct me if I’m wrong. There must be some way to make SB County leadership accountable! If the rank and file employees are asked to make concessions, it is only fair that BoS and CEO make concessions as well. We are all in this together!

  24. @Unwilling: You are right. I sincerely doubt that what the BoS nor the CEO’s staff is so vital as to command such outrageous salaries and benefits. The non-exempt county employees work just as hard (or harder) than the spoiled A-holes at the higher levels, especially when they as exempt employees, are allowed to work fewer hours, etc. If the public only knew just what these overpaid jerks do all day, “telecommuting” from there homes, golfing, drinking, partying, traveling, hob-knobbing, etc., etc. It’s nothing short of a travesty! It’s unconscionable that in these tough economic times this kind of puffery is allowed to occur unabated. They, the BoS and the CEO, and all of their staff, should be ashamed!

  25. Field Reps for the county should not be trying to sell commercial property to foreign investors. I know this as a fact as I was at the Cocky Bull waiting for a meeting with Bill Jensen when Jesse Flores showed up in a County vehicle with foreign investors trying to facilitate the sale of the Cocky Bull. So, what kind of involvement does the county have with Commercial Realestate? This occured prior to the September preliminary elections of this year. Why are we paying our County Field Reps to sell commercial realestate to overseas investors?

  26. Anonymous: I beg to differ that we voted them into office. Between the corruption at the Registrar of Voters office and the money involved to buy the seat.

  27. @Phelan Patriot: Yep, I concur. The tentacles of corruption run deep within the County of San Bernardino. Between SBPEA and the Registrar of Voters, the rank and file county employee doesn’t stand a chance when going up against County leadership. Even the nice reporter from P.E. is too naive to comprehend just what goes on at the county!

With SB Co. “leadership” it’s their way, or the highway. What hubris!

  28. JA: Are you the same J.A. that gave Ovitt a run for his money about his violations to Constitutional and Civil Violations while he was Mayor of Ontario?

  29. If it’s the same JA I am thinking of (as in former ONT Councilman and SBCo. DDA), he didn’t give him a run for his money, more like he gave him (Ovitt) money to run (for County Supervisor). Wasn’t JA actually the recipient of Ovitt’s seat on the ONT City Council when Ovitt vacated it because he was elected supervisor?

  30. Little Stevie Wonder: There was a JA Citizen I have been reading about a few years ago that went up as a member of the Public against Ovitt because of an ordinance that Ovitt while mayor wanted in effect in Ontario where it made watching cars driving illegal. It seemed that JA had a lot of information on then Mayor that would be interesting to hear. Might even be able to be a clearer view on money passing hands for current favor’s. Thanks for the heads up.
