iePolitics has learned from a well-placed West-End source that the February 10, 2010, incoherent spectacle produced by San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos and California Attorney General Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown, charging former Assessor Bill Postmus and former Assistant Assessor Jim Erwin with multiple felonies, including bribery and embezzlement, may have had a much more far-reaching purpose. And that “purpose” has to do with one unnamed, but very identifiable, John Doe; John Doe No. 1, i.e., Jeff Burum, to be exact.
The underlying scheme of Ramos’ recent interest in “cleaning up corruption in San Bernardino County” is oft-discussed by political insiders. His crusade came about only after his power base took a major hit due to the defeat of political crony and powerbroker, San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor Dennis Hansberger, by dark horse candidate Neil Derry.
However, Brown’s sudden interest came as a bit of a surprise. The surprise was not so much that he would have interest in a large scandal during an election year, but rather that he would condone and participate in a clear case of prosecutorial misconduct, seeming completely uninformed as to the merits of the Colonies decision, its history, and the ramifications of re-opening the case. Brown seemed to play right into Ramos’ hands and insiders continue to wonder what Brown will think and do when he realizes he has been had by the nefarious acts of our unscrupulous district attorney.
But is Brown yet another victim of Ramos’ deceit or is he as culpable as Ramos himself? Sources suggest Brown has his own scurrilous agenda and the Colonies Settlement is being used in a roundabout way to discredit his expected opponent, Meg Whitman.
Jeff Burum has been a Meg Whitman supporter from early on when she first suggested she may put in a bid for the governorship. Jeff is so much of a supporter that in early 2009 he hosted an event to introduce Whitman to local Republicans. Ramos attended that event and gained inside information.
As Whitman’s intentions to run for governor solidified, Burum was slated to become Whitman’s statewide finance chair. Sources say Ramos provided Brown with inside information to aid Brown in exchange for assistance with Ramos’ own campaign of deceit to gain favor with the voters in an expected Congressional bid in 2012. Now Brown is participating in a campaign to publicly humiliate and discredit Burum based on legal fallacies that any experienced attorney should recognize in order to cast a shadow on Whitman’s decision-making abilities.
Last month’s press conference left many scratching their heads as Brown seemed to have lost it. Maybe he has lost it . . . lost his sense of ethics in search of political assassination.
So JB really is a politician after all, I knew I could smell it over on InlandPolitics(dot)com and in his editorial. This seems really politically amateurish that Burum would willingly put himself in a position to be used against Whitman, and really politically amateurish that Whitman’s people would allow it to happen. And then there is Mikey, who claims to be a Republican, but we all know differently, especially when we see Mikey and Moonbeam campaigning together. Now the timing is all becoming a lot clearer for the Mikey and Moonbeam show, but they’re both more than a little worried that they will be pulled into the fracas once a RICO lawsuit is finished being built by the feds.
If this is true in anyway, all politicians should be outraged and speak up. I hope more evidence develops on this issue.
I hope Ms. Whitman has been told about this.
This is laughable. To think Jerry Brown got involved in this case to help his chances to become Governor, you have to be out of your mind. You are taking this issue to the bizarre level. It appears you have too much idle time on your hands. Get involved in something positive. If this was to be true Browm’s political career would be finished.
publius, it will be after she kicks his ass.
SBCO Voter, if she does, I won’t be because of this latest spin on corruption. This is black helicopter thinking. Let’s get real, not every decision in politics is based on this case. Some people take themselves too seriously and their situation not serious enough. Perhaps their time would be better spent preparing a defense for their case, because like it or not they are going forward regardless who the next governor is. Just a thought.
All the same, whether you believe this or not, there is a lot of manuevering in politics, behind the scenes, people being used or favors traded for gain in another way. We never see most of it, but it’s there alright.
Publius, I have thought about many things you have written in the past. Is that rock you live under that heavy? Is this concept any further than Mikey trying to build a conspiracy case—-backwards? If I took this same case to any SB Deputy DA, or my favorite AUSA in LA I would have been laughed out of the building. Mikey’s crew or Bud’s crew has got real problems now. No smoking gun and there never will be one. I hope your not on the Jury! Sorry if I missed your point. I just had to say something about this.
Ramos should not of been endorsed for District Attorney if he’s passing secrets to Jerry Brown. I hope in 2014 NO one on the executive board endorses him in the SB Republican Party.
